⚡ Squarebill
Shallow running (0–4 ft), deflects off cover. Best in spring and fall when fish are shallow.
🔔 Lipless
Sinks on slack line, retrieved at any depth. Rattle triggers reaction bites. Great in grass and cold water.
🎯 Deep Diver
Long bill dives 8–20 ft. Cover water fast and locate fish offshore. Summer and post-spawn staple.

The KVD 1.5 is the squarebill standard by which all others are measured. The square bill deflects off wood, rocks, and laydowns in a way that triggers reaction strikes from fish that weren't even looking at it. We've caught more bass on this bait in early spring — targeting riprap and dock pilings in 2–4 feet of water — than anything else in the box. The action is a tight wobble that works even at slow retrieves when water temps are in the high 50s.
- Exceptional deflection action off cover
- Works at slow and fast retrieves
- Durable finish holds up
- Wide color selection
Pros
- Treble hooks need upgrading for big fish
- Not great in open water
Cons

The Rat-L-Trap has been producing bass since 1955 and it still does the job better than most modern imitators. The loud BB rattle triggers reaction strikes in stained water and grass flats where bass can hear it before they see it. In late winter as water starts warming, a slow yo-yo retrieve through submerged grass edges is one of the most reliable patterns there is.
- Loud rattle triggers reaction strikes
- Versatile at multiple depths
- Excellent value around $7
- Great in grass and stained water
Pros
- Treble hooks prone to grass fouling
- Less effective in clear water
Cons

The DT-10 is Rapala's benchmark deep diver and it earns that status through a near-perfect combination of action, depth, and castability. On 10 lb fluorocarbon with a long cast, this bait reaches 10–12 feet and deflects bottom with an action that triggers suspended fish holding on points and ledges in summer. The balsa construction gives it a buoyancy that makes it rise on the pause — another trigger.
- Balsa construction = natural action
- Consistent depth range
- Rises on pause — great trigger
Pros
- Balsa can crack with heavy use
- Pricier than plastic alternatives
